Understanding Weeks and Dates
The Basics of a Week
A week consists of seven consecutive days, starting traditionally on Monday and ending on Sunday in the ISO 8601 standard, though many cultures begin the week on Sunday. The concept of a week is ancient, rooted in lunar cycles, and remains a fundamental unit for organizing work weeks, school weeks, and personal schedules. When dealing with weeks, it is useful to remember that 12 weeks equal 84 days, because each week contributes seven days to the total.
Why the Number 12?
The number 12 is often used in planning cycles because it aligns with quarterly periods (three months) and with many business or academic timelines. That said, for example, a 12‑week project typically spans a little over two months, allowing enough time for milestones while keeping momentum. Understanding the precise start date—12 weeks ago from today—ensures that you can accurately measure elapsed time.
